Claude Code 2.1.288: Smart Resume and Recovery β Pick Up Where You Left Off
If Mods extended what Claude Code can do, 2.1.288 makes that extended capability reliable.
Days after Claude Code Mods launched on October 1, version 2.1.288 arrived. This update does not add new features β it focuses on reliability and UX. As agent workflows grow longer and more complex, interruptions and errors become more frequent. 2.1.288 improves what happens when things go wrong.
Smart Resume: Pick Up Without Losing Context
A session dropping in the middle of a long task is one of the most frustrating experiences for a developer. Previously, resuming a session meant re-explaining context from scratch.
The smart resume in 2.1.288 restores prior work context more accurately when a session is restarted. Rather than just reloading conversation history, it identifies which tool calls completed and what still needs to happen β letting work flow naturally from where it stopped. This is especially effective when resuming multi-step code refactoring or long analysis tasks.
Better Plugin and MCP Error Handling
As Claude Code''s ecosystem grows with Mods and plugins, the quality of error information when a third-party plugin or MCP server fails becomes critical.
2.1.288 provides clearer explanations when a plugin or MCP connection has a problem. Instead of a generic "connection failed" message, it tells you which plugin had an issue, what the problem is, and how to resolve it. For teams running custom Mods or connecting external MCP servers, this significantly reduces debugging time.
Improved Permission and Auto Mode Behavior
Claude Code''s permission system is a security cornerstone. But too many permission prompts, or behavior that doesn''t match expectations, kills productivity.
This update refines how Auto Mode evaluates permissions. Redundant permission prompts that appeared repeatedly are reduced, and the system better remembers patterns the user has already approved β delivering a more consistent experience.
Stability Across Cloud, SDK, Screen Reader, and Terminal Sessions
The fixes in 2.1.288 span several execution environments:
- Cloud environments: Better connection stability for remote execution sessions
- SDK integration: Edge cases resolved when calling Claude Code programmatically via the SDK
- Screen readers: Improved compatibility with accessibility tools
- Terminal sessions: Display issues with long outputs or complex rendering are fixed
The Relationship to Mods
Mods (2.1.287) was about expanding Claude Code''s capabilities. 2.1.288 is about making those expanded capabilities work reliably. The more custom Mods you write and the more complex your plugin environment becomes, the more important a trustworthy resume-and-recovery mechanism underneath becomes.
Reliability updates like this often matter more in practice than headline features. A developer running dozens of agent tasks a day can save meaningful time from better session resume alone.
How to Update
To keep Claude Code on the latest version:
claude update
Or if installed via npm:
npm update -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
To check your current version:
claude --version
Practical Tips
- Use checkpoints for long tasks: Smart resume helps, but building an explicit save habit at key milestones adds an extra safety layer
- Read plugin error messages carefully: They carry much more diagnostic information than before
- Set up Auto Mode permission patterns correctly from the start: One correct initial configuration eliminates repeated approval prompts going forward
