Claude Enterprise Smart Reports: AI Holds a Mirror to Your Team's AI Usage

"I have no idea if our team is actually using AI well." Anthropic just answered that question directly.

On September 10, 2026, Anthropic launched Smart Reports beta for Claude Enterprise customers. Previously, understanding how a team used Claude meant pulling CSVs and doing manual analysis. Smart Reports flips that. Claude reads the team''s usage data, analyzes it, and writes the report itself.

4 Things Smart Reports Does

1. Groups Work into Workstreams

Smart Reports reads a sample of the team''s Claude conversations and clusters similar work into workstreams. "Code debugging," "report writing," "customer email responses" β€” the categories reflect what the team actually uses AI for, automatically.

2. Calculates Cost Per Workstream

Each workstream gets a cost figure attached: how much AI spend went into those tasks. You can see at a glance where tokens concentrate and which workstreams might be candidates for optimization.

3. Detects Friction Points

Sessions that involve a lot of retries, repetition, or long stalls signal friction. Smart Reports surfaces these patterns. Knowing "our team keeps hitting a wall on this type of question" is actionable information a manager can use.

4. Suggests Shared Skills

When the same prompt pattern repeats across the team, Smart Reports recommends packaging it as a shared skill. This is the bridge between individual AI use and team-level standardization.

How to Set It Up

When creating a report, administrators configure four things:

FieldOptions
Team / DepartmentAny defined team unit
Time rangeUp to the last 28 days
ProductsClaude Chat, Claude Code, Claude Cowork
Focus areas + custom questionsFree-form

Reports deliver interactive charts alongside written analysis β€” not just statistics, but interpretations with actual work context.

Beta Terms

  • Who: Claude Enterprise plan customers
  • Monthly limit: 10 free reports (resets on the 1st of every month)
  • Exclusions: Orgs using Customer-Managed Encryption Keys (CMEK) or HIPAA configs are not eligible
  • Default: Off β€” a Claude Enterprise Owner or Primary Owner must enable it

What Schools and Organizations Can Gain

Smart Reports is not a usage counter. It delivers actionable insight on three dimensions:

Cost optimization: See exactly where your AI budget goes. Adjust workstreams with low ROI.

Training design: Friction points are training gaps in disguise. Build onboarding content around the spots where teams consistently get stuck.

Workflow standardization: Converting recurring prompts into shared skills means new team members can use AI at team level from day one.

Quick Tips

  1. Start with one department, not the entire organization: Smaller scope means clearer patterns.
  2. Fill in the custom questions field: Direct questions like "which workstream costs the most?" or "where does AI use drop off?" sharpen the report.
  3. Use friction-point findings to design training: Where teams get stuck is where training content should go.
  4. Budget the 10 monthly reports strategically: Generate the high-priority reports early in the month, keep the remainder for mid-month adjustments.
